Have you ever?

a poem in relation to the novel The Bean Trees, by Barbara Kingsolver. In this poem I put emphasis on helping those who are less fortunate.

Have you ever considered?
Considered the families
Considered the children
Considered the suffering

Have you ever wondered?
Wondered what it’s like
Wondered how they survive
Wondered why not me

Have you ever cried?
Cried for their pain
Cried for the unfortunate
Cried for those who barely survive

Have you ever wished?
Wished you could stand by them
Wished you could put a coat on their back
Wished you could take their pain

Have you ever thought to take action?
It’s not too late to start now.

  1. Olivia,
This is the most sincere poem I have ever read. While reading I wanted to cry. You are so right! We need to consider what life for others who are less fortunate is like -- more often. This poem completely humbled me and I can tell those words are completely from the heart <3
    AMAZING!! ABSOULUTELY AMAZING!

  2. Oh, Olivia. This is such a sweet, powerful, and completely true poem. We really do need to consider those less fortuante than us a lot more than most of us do. I love your repetitiveness (if that's a word :) and how true and to the point this poem is. This is an absolutly amazing poem! I'm so proud of you, Olivia <3

  3. Olivia, this is a great poem! I loved the title and how you used that line throughout the poem. Repeating that made the meaning of your poem much more powerful. The meaning was so great, I loved that you were able to write about that and make people realize what they need to do. Great job!

  4. Thank you guys so much for the nice comments. I love getting comments:) I've read so many deep posts today. All these novels that we've been reading are so intense. We've been talking about some pretty deep subjects. For this poem I really thought that it was necessary to talk about all those people that aren't thought of and that don't have anything. I know that we can't really imagine what that would be like. We are so fortunate to live in the community that we do. There were a few characters in this novel that came from the south that had to hide everyday of their lives for fear of being caught by the government. That is unimaginable. Anyways, thank you so much for the nice comments:)
